1-Year-Old Child Development: Cognitive and Social-Emotional Milestones

Cognitive Development at 1 Year Old

Around their first birthday, babies experience rapid cognitive growth. At this stage, your child can look at a picture when the object in it is named and easily find a toy that you hide in front of them. They begin to actively explore their surroundings, learning about objects by throwing, banging, shaking, or biting them.

You might notice them beginning to use certain objects correctly according to their function, such as holding a cup to drink. They can put toys into a box and take them out, poke objects with their index finger, and point to things they want. They can also follow simple instructions like 'give me the toy' and love to imitate gestures.

Social and Emotional Milestones

Socially and emotionally, 1-year-olds are beginning to understand relationships and express their feelings. It is very common for them to experience separation anxiety, crying when their parents leave, or acting shy and anxious around strangers.

Your child will start to show clear preferences, developing favorite toys and people, and they may show fear in unfamiliar situations. To connect with you, they might hand you a toy to play, mimic sounds and actions to get your attention, and delight in classic games like peek-a-boo.

When to Consult a Specialist

Every child develops at their own pace, but certain signs warrant professional guidance. If your child cannot stand even with support, does not attempt to search for hidden objects, or loses skills they previously had, be sure to seek a professional developmental assessment.

You can monitor your child's progress using developmental checklists. If you ever have concerns about their growth, always reach out to a pediatric specialist for support.
