6 Tips to Strengthen Your Bond and Connection with Your Child

Building a strong relationship with your child starts with small, daily moments of connection. Here are 6 gentle suggestions to help you strengthen your bond and deepen your communication with your child:

1. Show Your Child Love Openly

Show your child how much you love them. Children always need to feel physical touch alongside verbal reminders that they are loved and supported.

2. Give Them Your Full, Undivided Attention

When spending time with your child, keep your focus entirely on them. Make a conscious effort to set aside worries, financial plans, or work projects during these moments. Children can instantly sense if your mind is elsewhere and you aren't truly "there." Therefore, aim to be present in both mind and body.

3. Dedicate 15-20 Minutes of "Special Time" Daily

Spend 15 to 20 minutes of dedicated "special time" with your child every day. Turn off all distractions, like televisions and phones. If you have more than one child, try to spend this time with each of them individually. Let your child choose the activity you do together during this special period.

4. Read Storybooks Together Every Day

Read a storybook to your child every day. They can sit on your lap or right next to you, whichever they prefer. Once the story is finished, chat about it and ask open-ended questions (e.g., "What do you think happened next?" or "Which character did you like the most, and why?"). Keep in mind that some children may want to color or move around while listening; try not to restrict them.

5. Play Games Where Your Child Can Take the Lead

Choose games and activities where your child can take the initiative. Activities like singing, dancing, or playing hide-and-seek are great ways to release energy and have fun together. Your child wants to play with you, but they also highly value having an active, decision-making role in the play.

6. Always Say Goodbye When You Leave

Always say goodbye whenever you need to leave. Even brief separations, like popping out to the grocery store, can make your child feel anxious if you slip away without a proper goodbye. Give them a kiss, tell them where you are going, and let them know when you will be back.
