Father and Child: Activity Suggestions by Age

Bonding with Your Baby

You can hold your baby close to your skin. Keeping your baby close and gently rocking them will make them feel safe and secure.

Babies enjoy being gently lifted up and down. This helps them feel that their parent is holding them securely. You can also tickle your baby and play peek-a-boo.

Chat with your baby. For infants, their father's voice is distinct from their mother's. Hearing your voice helps them connect with you and builds a foundation of trust. Make sure to be face-to-face when talking to your baby.

Take charge of your baby's daily care. Soothing them when they cry, feeding them, and changing their diapers will greatly strengthen your bond.

Sing their favorite children's songs and read age-appropriate storybooks. Babies love hearing their favorite songs and stories repeatedly.

When choosing books, look for bright, colorful, and large pictures. You don't have to read the text word-for-word; you can simply point out and describe what is happening on each page using short sentences.

Ensure your tone of voice and facial expressions are peaceful and soothing when spending time with your child. Babies pay close attention to human faces. You can make funny and diverse facial expressions to entertain them.

During infancy, hugging your baby, sitting them on your lap, talking, and reading to them are among the most valuable bonding activities.

Active Play and Exploration for Toddlers

Take your child to safe spaces where they can move as freely as possible. Encourage them to jump, run, and climb at a level suitable for their physical development.

Read storybooks together. In this activity, physical contact and introducing your child to new words are highly beneficial.

Play ball with your child. You can teach them how to throw, catch, and kick a ball.

Encourage your child to ask questions. Answer their questions with short, simple, and age-appropriate explanations.

Share activities that your child genuinely enjoys. This could be observing insects in the garden or engaging in water play.

Connecting and Growing Together

Discover a special place just for the two of you, or develop a unique secret handshake.

Ask your child about their day during dinnertime, and briefly share how your own day went.

Go for walks in nature together, collecting interesting plants, leaves, or stones along the way.

Play age-appropriate board games or conduct simple, fun science experiments together.

Ask your child what they would like to do, try, or learn, and plan activities based on their interests.

Dedicate time to read books side-by-side or together.

Engage in creative and educational activities tailored to your child's age.

Take full ownership of certain daily routines. You can manage a process entirely on your own—such as bath time or reading a bedtime story before sleep.
