How Play Therapy Makes a Difference: Everything You Need to Know

Play therapy helps children develop new and creative solutions to life's challenges, while fostering a deep sense of respect and acceptance for themselves and others. It encourages children to take responsibility for their behavior, learn to experience and safely express their emotions, and develop highly effective coping strategies.
Through the language of play, children also build empathy, learn to respect the thoughts and feelings of those around them, develop self-efficacy, and cultivate stronger social and relational skills within their families.
When the outcomes of 100 play therapy studies were reviewed, the treatment demonstrated moderate to high positive effects across the board (Bratton et al., 2005; Leblanc & Ritchie, 2001). Play therapy has proven its effectiveness regardless of a child's gender, age, or specific difficulties. Most importantly, research highlights that these positive effects are at their highest when parents actively participate in their child's healing journey.
