Parenting Attitudes in the RIE Philosophy

Core Principles of the RIE Approach
Give your child your full attention, especially during caregiving routines like feeding or changing. Slow down—both physically and mentally—to use these daily moments to strengthen your bond and build mutual trust.
Do activities together with your child, rather than doing them for your child. Avoid placing your baby into physical positions or activities they are not yet developmentally ready for, and ensure they have ample time for uninterrupted self-directed play.
Practical Tips for Respectful Parenting
Babies are constantly communicating their needs through subtle cues. Let them know you are listening and aware. For example, before picking your baby up from a lying position, explain to them what you are about to do.
Allow your child to experience and navigate struggles. It is essential for them to try and solve problems on their own, experience frustration, and learn that they can turn to you whenever they truly need your support.
Be clear, honest, and direct. Children of parents who struggle with emotional boundaries or project conflicting feelings can easily become anxious and constantly demanding.
Children need clear expectations and rules. Gentle discipline is a foundational root of security. A child who is never told 'no' is ultimately a child left without guidance.
Finally, let go of the assumption that children must always be happy. Life is not always happy, and protecting them from normal frustrations will only make the world seem frightening and difficult to navigate as they grow older.
